Exploring the gut from small intestines
The human gut is home to a complex microbial ecosystem with profound implications for health and disease. Yet, much of this environment remains difficult to access and investigate.
Mikrobat® is developing next generation ingestible technologies designed to overcome this challenge. By bringing together bioengineering, smart polymers, microbiome science and computational biology, we aim to develop new ways of exploring the gastrointestinal environment.
Why the Gut Matters?
The gastrointestinal tract is one of the most complex biological ecosystems in the human body. Yet, our ability to study this environment directly remains surprisingly limited.
A complex ecosystem
The human gut hosts trillions of microorganisms whose interactions with the host influence metabolism, immunity and physiology.
Location matters
The gut is not a uniform environment. Microbial communities, metabolites and physiological conditions vary substantially along the gastrointestinal tract.
Access remains a challenge
Most microbiome studies rely on stool samples, which provide valuable information but cannot fully capture the spatial and biochemical complexity of the whole gastrointestinal tract.

Mikrobat® had developed as a biodegradable ingestible sampling platform designed to collect biological material from selected regions of the gastrointestinal tract. The platform combines established ingestible form factors with biocompatible materials and a sampling architecture designed to recover sufficient material for downstream microbiome and molecular analyses.
